Objective : The objective for this assignment is to have you utilize the newspaper to learn about emerging trends and opportunities in the workplace and suggest possible careers and associated skills in demand as a result.



For this activity you will review the following list of article topics. You will choose ONE topic to focus on. You will be responsible for locating and summarizing TWO article you find on the topic you have chosen to research. Each article summary should be a minimum of 250 words.

Article topics include:

1. An article that addresses emerging a) economic or b) social trends and identifies careers which are in demand as a result.

2. Identification of loca/regional work opportunities. Consider self-employment initiatives.


Use an electronic version of a Canadian Newspaper to locate your article. If you have access to print versions you may use it instead. Use terms of interest to search for articles, for instance: green technology, demographic trends…

Write a precis on the article you have located. Be sure to list careers or work opportunities suggested, and describe the skills necessary for those mentioned.

Conclude your summary with a one paragraph (6-8 sentences) personal opinion/thought to the article you summarized. You may want to consider this question to guide you answer: “What future possibilities can you imagine based on what you read?”

How to Write a Precis

What is a précis?

A précis is basically a summary of a lengthy written passage (article, chapter, report, etc.). It is reducing an original piece of writing to one-quarter to one-fifth of its size.

The over-riding objective of a well-written précis should be to serve as a substitute for the original work.

What are the goals of a précis?

¬ To compress and clarify a lengthy passage, article, or book, while retaining important concepts, key words, and important data.

¬ Remove what is superfluous and retain the core essence of the work. Give a brief description of key terms.

¬ Give a brief description of methods—an idea of the general approach used by the authors/researchers.

¬ State the purpose of the research or piece of writing (why was it important to conduct this research or write on this topic?)

What must be included in a précis?

¬ This is what was studied (argued, discussed).

¬ This is how it was done (this was the focus).

¬ This is what was learned.

¬ This is what it means (why it is important).

What a précis is NOT:

A summary or a précis is NOT a personal interpretation of a work or an expression of your opinion of the idea

What is the process for writing a précis?


Begin with an article that is relevant and interesting, one with meat to it.

Read it and make sure that you understand it.

Quite often many reads will be required.


Select the most important points contained in the article.

Underline or highlight those points.


What is the main point of the writing? Write this in your own words.

Continue identifying the key points. Rewrite these in your own words.

Here is a central rule:

Do not copy a single sentence from the article! You may use key words and phrases only when you are expressing ideas which are technically precise or when you feel comfortable using the writer’s own words, e.g., you understand exactly what he or she means, and there is really no better way to express the concept.


Write a précis of the article in which you state the entire argument and present the logical progression (the development) of the argument.


Rewrite and reduce the article to one-fifth to one-quarter of its original length.
